Goodwin has been recognized as a leader in intellectual property law after being named to the National Law Journal’s 2016 Intellectual Property Hot List. Goodwin was one of just 14 law firms who “moved the bar” for IP law and scored big wins for clients.

Goodwin was included on the list, in part, for the favorable outcome it secured on behalf of Teva Pharmaceuticals in a patent case before the U.S. Supreme Court involving multiple sclerosis drug, Copaxone in 2015. In what the National Law Journal described as “a landmark decision,” the Goodwin team argued that appeals courts should review claim-construction findings for clear error rather than from scratch, to which the Supreme Court agreed, overturning a long-standing Federal Circuit practice.

"It certainly was significant that we were asking the Supreme Court to take up and reverse a rule the Federal Circuit had followed for almost 20 years," said Goodwin partner Willy Jay in the article. The case, he said, showed the firm's litigation chops and expertise with pharmaceutical products.

The feature article also describes Goodwin’s representation of B&B Hardware in trademark litigation that spanned two decades before securing a victory in the Supreme Court.

The National Law Journal provides in-depth coverage of the issues that mean the most to private practitioners, judges, corporate lawyers, government attorneys and other members of the legal community.
