Goodwin Procter's John Mercer Recognized for Pro Bono Services

Massachusetts Housing Partnership acknowledges Mercer’s work with its organization

BOSTON, Feb. 10, 2003 — Goodwin Procter LLP Corporate Attorney John Mercer was recently recognized by The Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) for providing free legal representation to families buying homes through MHP's Soft Second Loan Program.

The Soft Second Loan Program assists low-income families in the purchase of their first home. The offering combines a conventional first mortgage with a subsidized second mortgage, increasing the buyer’s purchasing power by 20 percent. However, even with this type of loan assistance, legal fees are often too costly, and this is where the free legal services become helpful.

Goodwin Procter has an active pro bono practice. Previous clients include the Friends of Boston’s Homeless, Neighborhood Housing Services of New York, the Environmental Resources Trust and the Women's Educational and Industrial Union.
