Goodwin Procter Moves To Times Square – Now A Major Tenant In The New York Times Building

Firm Leases Six Floors in Celebrated Office Tower to Accommodate Growth

BOSTON, May 12, 2008 – Goodwin Procter today announced it has relocated its New York office location to The New York Times Building at 620 Eighth Avenue.  The firm, which signed a 15-year lease, will initially occupy more than 185,000 square feet on six floors in the dramatic new building, which opened last year.

“Goodwin Procter’s new location in the Times Square district, the media and financial capital of the United States, signifies our commitment to strengthen further our presence in the New York market,” said Regina M. Pisa, chairman and managing partner.  “In the 11 years since Goodwin Procter established its New York office, the firm has grown tremendously, from six lawyers in 1997 to nearly 200 today.  Our new space in The New York Times Building is designed to meet our clients’ and attorneys’ needs as we continue to provide best-in-class counsel and attract top-level legal talent.”

Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano designed the 52-story building in association with FXFOWLE Architects.  It features a dramatic double-skin curtain wall of clear glass with a screen of ceramic rods that both serves as a sunshade and allows for sweeping city views, as well as a unique open-air birch-and-moss garden with seven 50-foot-tall paper birch trees surrounded by glass walls in the lobby.

“The New York Times Building offers extraordinary amenities and will be a world-class work environment for our clients and employees,” said Albert J. Solecki, Jr., chair of the firm’s New York office.  “We are thrilled to occupy such a technologically advanced, energy-conscious and aesthetically pleasing space.”

Goodwin Procter opened its first office in New York in 1997 and quickly established itself as a local powerhouse in both litigation and corporate law.  On the litigation side, the firm’s primary focus is on matters involving intellectual property, white collar crime, products liability, securities, general commercial disputes, and labor and employment.  On the business law side, Goodwin Procter’s corporate lawyers focus on transactional work involving private equity, real estate capital markets, intellectual property and securities and corporate finance.

“Selecting Goodwin Procter’s new location was a challenging process,” said Alexander A. Randall, a partner and head of Goodwin Procter’s Real Estate Committee.  “We researched and toured many buildings throughout Manhattan, but ultimately, none could match the quality, convenience and impressiveness of The New York Times Building.”
