Goodwin Named to National Law Journal’s 2022 Appellate Hot List

Professionals
National Law Journal has once again named Goodwin to its Appellate Hot List. The annual award honors firms that have tackled novel issues and overcame significant challenges in order to achieve high-stakes wins for clients in appellate courts nationwide.

Goodwin’s Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice is a destination practice for appeals across multiple practice areas. Over the past year, the firm’s Appellate lawyers have led successful appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court, several federal courts of appeals, and state appellate courts on matters encompassing statutory and regulatory disputes, class actions, ERISA, RICO, bankruptcy, IP, and IP-adjacent disputes.

Notable matters during the review period include a Supreme Court win in Niz-Chavez v. Garland, which will potentially allow tens of thousands of noncitizens to seek cancellation of removal, and a successful U.S. Supreme Court petition in Alig v. Quicken Loans, which vacated the Fourth Circuit’s decision affirming class certification and a multimillion-dollar damages award. The Appellate Litigation team also successfully defended the dismissal of an ERISA class action against General Electric in the Second Circuit, won a third appeal in the Federal Circuit for Dr. Reddy’s in its patent dispute with Indivior, and secured a reversal from the Third Circuit in a long-running bankruptcy matter for CNA Insurance.

Goodwin’s Appellate group is routinely recognized as a top nationwide practice by Chambers USA and has been named a Practice Group of the Year by Law360. The firm is also highly ranked by The Legal 500 United States, which praised the practice for being “strong across many disciplines” and featuring “talented, forward-thinking and creative” lawyers.

The recognition is part of the National Law Journal’s Legal Awards 2022, which recognize the top litigation and appellate work from the past year. Goodwin Appellate partner Jaime Santos was also recognized as a D.C. Rising Star, an additional category in the National Law Journal’s Legal Awards 2022. This year’s winners will be honored at an awards event on October 20 in Washington, D.C.
