Calif. And UK Laws Reflect Global Focus On Kids' Privacy (Law360)

In early October, federal proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California combined more than 80 pending cases against various social media sites, alleging that the companies are hooking young users at the cost of their physical and mental health. The cases relate to children as young as 9, many of whom suffered serious mental health issues that were alleged to have been brought upon or worsened by certain social media activity. The use of litigation to pin responsibility for the dangers of social media platforms on the companies that run them comes at a time when new standards for the regulation of children's data are proliferating across the globe, most notably in the U.K and the European Union, as well as in California.
