Tiffiney Carney, an associate in the firm’s Business Litigation group, focuses her practice on complex commercial litigation and real estate disputes. She has substantial experience managing discovery-related projects, drafting and contributing to dispositive motions, and working with experts on a range of scientific topics. Ms. Carney joined Goodwin in 2013.

Professional Experience

Ms. Carney’s representations include:

  • Defending national mortgage lender in federal and state courts, in lawsuits arising from residential mortgage-backed securities and other mortgage related practices;
  • Securing dismissals on jurisdictional grounds for mass tort defendant sued in federal and state courts throughout the country;
  • Representing real estate investment firm in contract dispute involving multi-million dollar asset purchase and allegations of conspiracy, veil-piercing, and successor liability; and
  • Representing client in complex case where plaintiff alleged the company caused nearly $1 billion in damages from flooding during Hurricane Katrina.

Pro Bono Work

Ms. Carney’s representations include:

  • Representing client seeking social security disability benefits;
  • Representing LGBT client seeking asylum from Guatemala;
  • Advising transgender clients at Whitman-Walker Clinic on the name-change process in DC, MD, and VA; and
  • Representing nonprofit school in construction defect case.


During law school, Ms. Carney served as managing editor for the Annual Survey of White Collar Crime, a publication within Georgetown Law’s American Criminal Law Review. She was a student attorney for the Georgetown Criminal Defense and Prisoner Advocacy Clinic, representing criminal defendants charged with misdemeanors in D.C. Superior Court and parole clients before the U.S. Parole Commission. In addition, Ms. Carney interned for the Honorable Emmet G. Sullivan at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and for Servicemembers Legal Defense Network in Washington, D.C.
