BOSTON, Oct. 16, 2006 – 3M Corp. has acquired Brontes Technology Inc., a Lexington, Mass.-based developer of 3-D intra-oral imaging technology for use in dentistry, for $95 million in cash. The acquisition adds to 3M's oral care business proprietary intra-oral scanning technology that enables capturing 3-D digital dental impressions used to design and produce crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances.
Brontes began as a project at the MIT Deshpande Center, and raised around $8 million in venture capital funding from Bain Capital Ventures, Charles River Ventures and IDG Ventures Boston.
