Goodwin Procter Named North American Law Firm of the Year for Transactions and Fund Formation by Private Equity Real Estate Magazine

Goodwin Procter, a national Am Law 50 firm, today announced that it has been named North American Law Firm of the Year in both the Transactions and Fund Formation categories by Private Equity Real Estate (PERE) magazine. PERE, a PEI Media publication, selected Goodwin based on a poll of its readers throughout the global private equity real estate industry. This is the fifth time in six years the firm has received recognition as the top law firm for fund formation work by PERE.

Goodwin was recognized by PERE for its successful representation of BlackRock, Brookfield Asset Management, GTIS Partners, Rockwood Capital, and Wheelock Capital in a variety of real estate-related matters in 2012. Goodwin also represented AvalonBay Communities, which partnered with Equity Residential, in the $16 billion purchase of Lehman Brothers’ Archstone affiliate – a deal PERE named 2012 Exit of the Year in North America. The firm has also advised on more than $24 billion in REIT M&A transactions in recent months.

“We are honored to be selected by the industry’s leading professionals as North American Law Firm of the Year in Fund Formation for the fifth time,” said John Ferguson, co-chair of the firm’s Real Estate Private Investment Funds Practice. “This award speaks to the strength of our client relationships and practice, which ranges from new firms raising their first funds to the industry’s largest fund managers and investors.”

“We are extremely pleased to be recognized by PERE not only for our fund formation work, but also for our transactional work,” said Andrew Sucoff, co-chair of Goodwin’s Real Estate, REITs and Real Estate Capital Markets practice. “We are fortunate to represent many of the leading real estate investors in the country on some of the most interesting and significant deals involving commercial and multi-family residential assets in 2012 and we look forward to assisting our growing list of clients in 2013.”

Co-chaired by partners Gil Menna and Andy Sucoff, Goodwin’s Real Estate, REITs and Real Estate Capital Markets Practice has more than 90 attorneys dedicated to advising clients on matters ranging from portfolio acquisitions and complex REIT structures to investment management strategies, public finance projects and large-scale developments.
