Thomas A. Early
Tom Early, a counsel in Goodwin’s Financial Industry and Investment Management practices, has extensive experience in matters related to open-end and closed-end registered investment companies. His practice includes counseling investment advisers and independent directors of mutual funds and interfacing with regulatory authorities on a variety of complex legal and regulatory matters. An associate at Goodwin early in his career, Mr. Early rejoined the firm in 2013.
Mr. Early is a member of the American Bar Association and the Ohio Bar Association. He has twice served as a Director of ICI Mutual Insurance Company and has spoken at a number of mutual fund industry conferences.
Prior to rejoining Goodwin, Mr. Early practiced at another AmLaw 100 firm from 2007 until his arrival at Goodwin. Previously and commencing in 1998, he was senior vice president, general counsel, chief corporate affairs officer and secretary at Janus Capital Group (“Janus”). At Janus, he was a member of the Janus Management Committee with responsibility for the Law and Regulatory Affairs, Compliance and Risk Management Departments. He supervised regulatory matters related to Janus’ domestic and international business, with particular emphasis on mutual fund issues, implementation of a risk management program and legal support for related compliance matters.
From 1997 to 1998, Mr. Early was the chief legal officer of Prudential Investments Fund Management LLC, a subsidiary of The Prudential Insurance Company of America (“Prudential”) and reported directly to the president. He was responsible for legal matters involving Prudential’s domestic and offshore mutual funds. Prior to this, from 1994 to 1997, he was the chief legal officer of Prudential Retirement Services, a business unit of Prudential which provides a full range of retirement services to qualified pension plans.
Prior to joining Prudential in 1994, Mr. Early held senior attorney positions at Frank Russell Company, a global consulting and investment management firm, and Federated Investors, Inc., a major mutual fund complex. He began his legal career at a well-known Cleveland firm before joining Goodwin as a senior associate in 1986.
