Ms. McDermott regularly advises on legal issues related to privacy, data security, data governance, Internet strategy and risk management and consumer protection for clients across a range of industries, including financial services, software and media, healthcare technology, consumer products and e-commerce. Her practice includes strategic counseling on issues related to privacy, data security, incident response, contracts, corporate transactions and business strategy.
Ms. McDermott regularly advises clients on compliance with privacy and data security laws and regulations, specifically the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Federal Trade Commission Act, CAN-SPAM, the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, the California Online Privacy Protection Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, EU Data Directive, the US-EU and US-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks, and the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS).
Prior to joining Goodwin, Ms. McDermott was an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Ballard Spahr.
Ms. McDermott is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals.
During law school, Ms. McDermott was a law clerk at the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics.
