Mark Raffman, a recent member of Goodwin's Executive Committee, concentrates his practice on complex product liability litigation (including silica, drywall and other building and construction products), insurance litigation (including coverage and consumer litigation), domestic and international commercial litigation and arbitration, and toxic tort and mass casualty litigation. He has represented clients before state and federal trial and appellate courts, administrative agencies and arbitration panels.

Mr. Raffman has been recognized as a Client Service All-Star by BTI Consulting Group, based on interviews with general counsel at large and Fortune 100 companies. He has also been selected for inclusion in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and The Legal 500 U.S.

Professional Activities

Mr. Raffman is a member of the Council on Litigation Management. He is also a member of the Defense Research Institute.

Professional Experience

Mr. Raffman was a partner at Shea & Gardner prior to its combination with Goodwin in 2004.


In 2011 and 2013, The BTI Consulting Group Inc. recognized Mr. Raffman as a BTI Client Service All-Star based on interviews with more than 300 general counsel at large and Fortune 1000 organizations. He was noted for his client focus, solid legal skills and the ability to demonstrate an exceptional understanding of clients' business, produce outstanding results and reduce costs. Mr. Raffman has also been selected for inclusion in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business. While in law school, he served as Supreme Court Note Editor on the Harvard Law Review.

Areas of Practice


On litigation and arbitration matters, representative clients include Lafarge North America Inc. (product liability, mass tort, and complex commercial litigation and arbitration); Icynene Corporation (product liability); Pangborn Corporation (product liability and insurance matters); and The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies (insurance coverage litigation). Mr. Raffman’s recent representations include:

  • A major cement manufacturing company in mass tort litigation alleging that a breakaway barge caused floodwall breaches during Hurricane Katrina resulting in massive flooding of the New Orleans area, resulting in a defense verdict
  • A major health insurance company in class action litigation involving allegations of consumer fraud in connection with its managed care products, resulting in denial of class certification and a favorable settlement of individual claims
  • A large building products manufacturer in class action litigation involving allegations that the company marketed defective Chinese-manufactured drywall, resulting in a dismissal with prejudice
  • Multiple building products companies as national coordinating counsel for product liability and mass tort matters
