Jackie L. Segel
Jackie Segel advises and defends Fortune 500 companies in complex national product liability litigation, with a focus on pharmaceutical and tobacco product industries. She has served as national counsel in high-profile personal injury cases, class actions, MDLs and third-party reimbursement cases.
With a degree in psychology and more than 20 years of experience in litigation, Ms. Segel specializes in preparing witnesses for effective delivery in all aspects of litigation, ranging from depositions and trials to FDA regulation and manufacturing processes. She has developed training programs for company witnesses in a wide range of industries, affording her clients a competitive advantage for strategic business planning and removal of performance barriers both in the business and litigation arenas. Ms. Segel has extensive experience in developing risk management plans for her clients as part of her training program which includes working with in-house counsel on document retention and discovery issues. She has also been a leader in devising strategies to defend novel claims brought against industries facing myriad challenges, including identifying critical leverage points for her clients to incorporate in their business and litigation practices.
Ms. Segel has particular expertise in developing expert witnesses in complex medical and scientific areas. This includes preparing these experts for Daubert hearings, depositions and trial testimony. Ms. Segel works with experts in a wide range of focus areas, including toxicology, psychiatry, epidemiology, chemistry, consumer behavior and marketing practices, and often serves as a consultant in preparing experts for other law firms involved in large scale litigation. Her recent client representations include:
- An associate principal scientist and Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology in connection with cigarette design and FDA regulatory issues
- The former president and CEO of a publicly traded pharmaceutical company in defending a patent infringement trial
- The general manager of a pharmaceutical company in charge of sales and marketing for respiratory products, including 2014’s top selling brand medication that was the subject of a patent infringement case
- A board certified psychiatrist in connection with issues implicated in the Florida Engle trials
