April Weisbruch

April Weisbruch is an associate in the firm’s Litigation Department and a member of its Intellectual Property Group, where she focuses on all aspects of intellectual property, including both patent prosecution and patent litigation. She joined Goodwin in 2010. Ms. Weisbruch’s focus on “full spectrum IP work,” which also includes complex opinion work drafting freedom-to-operate (FTO) and invalidity opinions, allows her to counsel clients at all stages in the development of their intellectual property portfolios.

Ms. Weisbruch has represented clients in all phases of patent litigation, and has had significant trial experience in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the United States Court of Federal Claims. Ms. Weisbruch has also represented clients in post-grant proceedings before the United States Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). She has experience with all aspects of patent prosecution including drafting and prosecuting patent and trademark applications for clients in a variety of industrial sectors, examiner interviews, petitions and appeals.


The diverse technology areas at issue in the intellectual property matters handled by Ms. Weisbruch include, for example, electronics, procurement software, wireless e-mail technology, medical devices, pharmaceutical chemistry, e-commerce and biotechnology.

Selected representations include:

  • ePlus Inc. v. Lawson Software, Inc. (E.D. Va.). Represented patent owner in trial, appellate and contempt proceedings.
  • NTP, Inc. v. Sprint Nextel Corp. (E.D.Va.). Represented patent owner in a suit concerning wireless email technology.
  • Linick v. United States (Fed. Cl.). Represented patent owner in recovery for damages resulting from a Secrecy Order under 35 U.S.C. § 183.

Ms. Weisbruch has also co-authored an tactical guide on the subject of Non-Practicing Entity Litigation.

Professional Activities

Ms. Weisbruch is a member of the Virginia Bar Association as well as the Court of Federal Claims Bar Association. She is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).
