Goodwin Procter Partner Richard Strassberg Admitted to American College of Trial Lawyers

NEW YORK , November 8, 2011 Goodwin Procter partner Richard M. Strassberg has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the premier legal associations in America. The induction ceremony took place before an audience of approximately 800 persons during the recent 2011 Annual Meeting of the College in La Quinta, California.

Founded in 1950, the American College of Trial Lawyers is composed of the best of the trial bar from the United States and Canada. Fellowship in the College is extended by invitation only, and only after careful investigation, to those experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality. Lawyers must have a minimum of fifteen years trial experience before they are considered for Fellowship.

Membership in the College cannot exceed one percent of the total lawyer population of any state or province. There are approximately 5,800 members in the United States and Canada, including active Fellows, Emeritus  Fellows, Judicial Fellows (those who ascended to the bench after their induction) and Honorary Fellows. The College strives to improve and elevate the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the trial profession. Qualified lawyers are called to Fellowship in the College from all branches of trial practice. They are carefully selected from among those who customarily represent plaintiffs in civil cases and those who customarily represent defendants, those who prosecute accused of crime and those who defend them. The College is thus able to speak with a balanced voice on important issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.

Strassberg, Chair of Goodwin Procter’s White Collar Crime & Government Investigations Practice, specializes in white collar criminal defense, corporate internal investigations, and complex business and financial litigation. He is the ninth Goodwin Procter partner to be inducted into the college, including active College members John Aldock, Joseph Savage and Paul Ware.

Strassberg was also recently recognized as The American Lawyer’s Litigator of the Week for securing victories in two of the most closely followed white collar cases in the country, SEC v. Rorech, the first ever derivatives insider trading case, and United States v. Fred Schiff and Richard Lane, the Bristol Myers Squib accounting fraud case. He had previously been recognized by The American Lawyer for securing an acquittal for his client in the KPMG criminal tax shelter case.

“A fierce litigator with impressive trial skills, Rich consistently demonstrates excellence through his work and inspires those who work with him,” said Regina M. Pisa, Chairman and Managing Partner of Goodwin Procter. “His victories in and out of court are a clear result of his intelligence, experience and overall character.”

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Strassberg is a Board member of New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, a Master in the Federal Bar Council Inn of Court, a member of the New York Council of Criminal Defense Lawyers and a founding member and former Co-Chair of the UJA’s Criminal Law Group. Prior to joining Goodwin Procter, Strassberg was the Chief of the Major Crimes Unit in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
