Goodwin Adds Depth to California Real Estate Industry Practice with Partner David Phelps

Global law firm Goodwin today announced that David Phelps has joined the Real Estate Industry practice as partner, resident in the Santa Monica office. Phelps is the third partner to join Goodwin’s Real Estate Industry practice in California in the past year, following the arrival of  Alex Jacobs.

“David’s practice is a perfect fit for our firm,” said Minta Kay, chair of the Real Estate Industry practice. “His hospitality, real estate joint venture, and finance experience will enhance our local and global clients’ ability to deploy capital and achieve business goals. We are thrilled to welcome him to the practice as our momentum and plans for West Coast growth continue to resonate with the market, as evidenced by exceedingly high levels of client demand.”

Phelps represents owners and investors in connection with the acquisition, development, and financing of properties of all types, with a particular emphasis on hospitality. He has deep experience structuring complex joint ventures for the acquisition, operation, and development of investment properties throughout the United States and globally, including portfolio and programmatic joint ventures. Phelps’ clients include international and domestic financial institutions, pension plans, private equity funds and their advisors, private real estate owners and developers, home office and sovereign wealth funds, and real estate investment trusts.

Prior to joining Goodwin, Phelps was a national real estate practice leader at a global law firm. He is recognized as a leading practitioner in Real Estate by Chambers, and in Real Estate and M&A by The Legal 500.

Phelps joins the Real Estate Industry practice during a period of global expansion. Earlier this year, Goodwin announced the addition of partners Markus Käpplinger and Sebastian Bruchwitz in Frankfurt.

Goodwin’s Real Estate Industry practice spans fund formation, joint venture, finance and transactions, public company/REIT work, and real estate M&A. The firm’s pioneering Propsci practice focuses on addressing the growing real estate needs of life sciences companies as they face challenges in developing land and facilities that support their businesses in a continuously evolving sector. Goodwin’s groundbreaking Proptech practice, the first of its kind among leading global law firms, combines the legal and innovative experience and market savvy of its real estate, technology, intellectual property and data privacy groups. Goodwin is consistently ranked as a top advisor in the real estate industry, including in Commercial Property Executive, Chambers, The Legal 500, and Best Lawyers.
