When an associate at a city law firm drops a coffee cup into the office recycling bin, they might assume it disappears into the city’s anonymous waste network. In fact, that cup begins a highly choreographed journey from a central London collection point to a sorting facility in Purfleet, then north to a mill in Cumbria called James Cropper, where the paper and plastic are separated and transformed into new materials. Recorra’s, the firm behind the operation, goal was simple: recycle office paper and sell it back as copier paper. Clients include some of the world’s most prestigious law firms. Among them are Goodwin. Indeed, according to Dean Mellor, senior facilities manager at Goodwin: “Partnering with Recorra allows us to turn everyday items, like used coffee grounds from our London office, into renewable fuel pellets which are then used as a renewable energy source. It’s a practical way to help reduce landfill waste and supports the shift away from fossil fuels.”
