George Hartnell is a senior attorney in the firm's Business Law Department, specializing in intellectual property transactions and strategies for technology clients. Mr. Hartnell joined Goodwin in 2013.

Mr. Hartnell's practice focuses on the strategic development, management and protection of intellectual property portfolios, with an emphasis on domestic and international patents. He has significant experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications on behalf of clients in the areas of electronics, optics, satellites, power control devices and systems, wind and solar energy devices, heat removal devices, liquid crystal display devices, imaging devices, integrated circuitry, business methods, medical devices, medical immuno-assay devices and medical rehabilitation devices.

Mr. Hartnell's transactional practice involves intellectual property due diligence and opinion work, including the rendering of freedom-to-operate, patentability and infringement opinions. Mr. Hartnell has worked on patent pre-litigation involving photo-imaging devices.

Professional Experience

Prior to joining Goodwin, Mr. Hartnell was an associate in the Boston Office of Edwards Angell Palmer and Dodge and also worked at a Boston patent boutique. While attending law school, Mr. Hartnell worked in the Patent Office of the NASA Research Facility at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia.

Mr. Hartnell is a member of the Boston Bar Association and is a past president of the Lowell's Boat Shop Trust, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that he incorporated.
