Chris Herbert is an associate in the firm’s Litigation department and a member of its Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice. Chris’s work focuses on appellate matters and complex civil litigation.

Chris originally joined Goodwin in 2018, before leaving to clerk for Justice John C. Englander of the Massachusetts Appeals Court. Chris re-joined Goodwin in 2023, upon completion of his clerkship.

Chris graduated from Suffolk University Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Suffolk Law Review.

Experience

Chris’s recent representative experience includes:

  • Co-authored prevailing brief in the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court securing dismissal of claims brought by the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office against the Town of Milton, MA to enforce the MBTA Communities Law
  • Secured reversal of a housing court decision in the Massachusetts Appeals Court for a pro bono client, with the Appeals Court holding for the first time that tenants whose tenancies are terminated “for cause” are permitted to raise the defense of retaliatory eviction
  • Representing manufacturer of generic pharmaceuticals against the Internal Revenue Service regarding the deductibility of litigation expenses incurred in defending against Hatch-Waxman patent infringement claims
