Ryan Klima

Ryan Klima is an associate in Goodwin’s Intellectual Property Litigation group whose practice spans patent litigation, PTAB proceedings, and strategic patent counseling. He represents technology companies in technically complex disputes involving electronics, software, semiconductors, and advanced computing systems, with experience developing invalidity and non-infringement strategies across parallel district court and post-grant proceedings. Drawing on a strong engineering and prosecution background, Ryan helps translate complex technical concepts into clear litigation strategy and practical business guidance.

Ryan’s experience spans all phases of patent disputes, including developing technical and legal positions, managing expert-driven discovery, analyzing source code and technical documentation, and supporting dispositive motion and pretrial strategy. He regularly works on matters involving parallel district court and PTAB proceedings, collaborating closely with technical experts and in-house teams to translate complex engineering concepts into persuasive litigation arguments and practical business solutions.

Ryan has worked with the following technologies: machine learning, multi-sensor integrated navigation systems, autonomous electric vehicles, robotics, computer architecture, cloud computing, semiconductors, batteries, medical and dental devices, consumer electronic devices, databases, cryptography, display technologies, computer networking, wireless communications and protocols, and predictive analytics.

• Ericsson Inc. et al v. Apple Inc. — Represented Apple in multiple inter partes review proceedings, successfully invalidating numerous asserted claims in patents at issue in Ericsson Inc. et al. v. Apple Inc., No. 6:22-cv-00060 (W.D. Tex.). The challenged patents involved standard-essential 5G wireless and video compression codec technologies.
• Samsung — Representing Samsung in multiple ex parte reexaminations and related district court litigation involving consumer electronics and software technologies, including development of technical arguments, coordination of parallel PTAB and district court strategy, and support of discovery and pretrial workstreams.
• Healthcare Technology Company — Assisting in the defense of patent litigation involving software-driven medical systems and data-centric platforms.
• Patent Investment and Enforcement Client — Supporting litigation strategy, case assessment, and development of technical positions relating to patent enforcement opportunities.
• Technology and Medical Device Clients — Advising on patent clearance, portfolio strategy, and IP counseling matters involving emerging device and software technologies.
• PTAB Pro Bono Appellate Review Initiative — Contributing to pro bono appellate review matters through PTAB Bar Association programs.
• ClearCorrect — Defended orthodontic technology company in patent infringement litigation in the Western District of Texas.*
• East Palestine Train Derailment Litigation — Successfully defended expert witnesses against multiple Daubert challenges and helped secure third-party liability findings in litigation arising from an NTSB investigation.*
• Skyworks Solutions — Represented semiconductor company in Section 337 patent litigation before the International Trade Commission.*
• Nearmap US — Achieved full invalidation of all challenged claims across three related inter partes review proceedings.*
• Pro Bono Family Law Matters — Secured third-party custody outcomes in DC Superior Court in collaboration with the Children’s Law Center.*

Prior to joining Goodwin, Ryan practiced at WilmerHale and Fish & Richardson, where he represented clients in patent litigation and post-grant proceedings involving complex technology disputes. Earlier in his career, he served as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, examining applications across electrical and computer technologies. Ryan also has experience in technology transfer, having worked with the College of William & Mary’s technology transfer office and Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties (VTIP).
