Goodwin Procter Acquires Schneck Weltman & Hashmall

BOSTON — Goodwin Procter announced today that it has acquired the New York-based law firm Schneck Weltman & Hashmall to pursue its strategy of expanding its nationally recognized products liability and mass tort litigation practice and to establish a general litigation practice in New York. At the same time, two partners from other national law firms, specializing in patent and intellectual property litigation, will also join the firm.

Regina M. Pisa, Chairman and Managing Partner of Goodwin Procter, said: “We have a nationally known and respected Litigation Department and an expanding New York office which, to date, has focused on corporate and securities work. We have been looking to expand our litigation presence in New York and to complement our existing New York practice. Schneck Weltman & Hashmall is a premier firm specializing in products liability, mass tort and complex commercial litigation and was a natural strategic fit.”

Joining Goodwin Procter from Schneck Weltman & Hashmall as Litigation Department partners are: Edward S. Weltman, David M. Hashmall, Jonathan I. Price, Joanne M. Gray, Glenn S. Kerner, Leonard F. Lesser and Robert Karmen. Arthur M. Schneck joins as Of Counsel. Joining the Corporate Department as partners are Joel W. Wagman and Ira A. Schreger. Both specialize in corporate transactions. Christopher J. Garvey, Felecia R. Wein and Frederick R. McGowen join as associates. Mr. Weltman will be the Chairman of the firm's Products Liability Litigation Practice and will head the firm's efforts in New York to expand its litigation practice there.

Schneck, Weltman & Hashmall attorneys have been involved in some of the nation's largest products liability and mass tort cases, including the “Fen-Phen” and DES litigation. Goodwin Procter will now open offices at 1285 Avenue of the Americas in addition to its existing offices at 599 Lexington Avenue.

Also joining Goodwin Procter are partners Thomas J. Creel and Frederick H. Rein. Mr. Creel, formerly co-chair of the Patent Litigation Practice Group at Kaye, Scholer, will be the Chairman of the firm's Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. He has 25 years of experience in the area of intellectual property litigation and teaches patent law at Columbia Law School. Mr. Rein joins the firm from Kenyon & Kenyon and has specialized in the area of pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent litigation for the past 10 years.

Managing Partner Pisa added: “Client needs, coupled with our strategic expansion in the fast-growing areas of patent and intellectual property law, made this an ideal opportunity.” Last June, 27 lawyers from New Jersey-based Friedman Siegelbaum joined Goodwin Procter, the majority of whom specialize in computer, technology and intellectual property law.

The addition of 15 lawyers to the firm brings Goodwin Procter's complement of attorneys to just under 500. The firm is headquartered in Boston with offices in New York, New Jersey and Washington DC.

Goodwin Procter, with 490 attorneys, is one of the nation's leading law firms. The firm provides full-service corporate and litigation services to a diverse client base with primary areas of focus including private equity/emerging companies, financial services, real estate and real estate securities & capital markets, intellectual property and technology, and mergers & acquisitions.
