BOSTON, Nov. 9, 2007 – Goodwin Procter LLP, a leading national law firm, achieved a significant appellate victory for its client NMT Medical, Inc. when a U.S. district court ruled that Cardia, Inc. infringed NMT’s patent and confirmed that NMT’s patent is valid.
In September 2004, NMT and Children’s filed a patent infringement suit against Cardia, alleging that Cardia’s “Intraspet” patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure device infringed a patent owned by Children’s Medical Center Corporation and licensed exclusively to NMT. PFOs are heart defects that form a hole or tunnel in cardiac tissue separating chambers of the heart, which can lead to stroke.
