Goodwin Procter Expands Life Sciences Practice with Addition of Karen Spindler in San Francisco Office

Goodwin Procter, a national Am Law 50 firm, announced today that Karen A. Spindler has joined the firm’s San Francisco office as a partner in its Life Sciences Practice. She will focus on advising life sciences companies and investors on a variety of intellectual property transactions. Spindler joins Goodwin from Kirkland & Ellis where she was a partner in its Palo Alto and San Francisco offices.

At Goodwin, Spindler will represent biotech and pharmaceutical companies in transactions involving intellectual property assets. Spindler has considerable experience structuring and negotiating license, collaboration, co-development, supply and manufacturing agreements. She also counsels financial investors, including private equity funds and operating companies, on complex intellectual property issues arising in corporate transactions, including mergers, stock and asset purchases, divestitures, royalty agreements, leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, bankruptcies and financing transactions.

Her clients have included Fortune 500 biopharmaceutical companies, semiconductor manufacturers and computer technology providers, as well as leading private equity funds.

“Karen’s broad range of experience, particularly in licensing and collaboration work, further strengthens Goodwin’s life sciences practice, both nationally and on the West Coast, as we continue to focus on assisting clients with high-end transactions,” said Kingsley Taft, national co-chair of the firm’s Life Sciences Practice. “Karen understands the collaborative approach we take for our life sciences clients, building teams that can meet the full range of needs for counsel on corporate, litigation, securities, M&A, licensing, FDA and patent issues.”

“Having an attorney of Karen’s caliber join our office adds even greater depth to our West Coast life sciences, technology and private equity practices,” added Bradley Bugdanowitz, chair of Goodwin’s San Francisco office. “With her expertise and market knowledge, Karen can provide innovative and strategic counsel to our growing West Coast and national client base.”

Spindler received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and her B.S. in biology from Stanford University. She is admitted to practice in California and was recently named a “Life Sciences Star” by Euromoney Legal Media Group for licensing and collaboration expertise in the life sciences industry.
