Robert Frederickson, Alicia Rubio-Spring and Jeff Scalzi Honored by the Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law Awards

The Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly Excellence in the Law Awards 2020 have recently honored Goodwin partner Robert Frederickson (Excellence in Pro Bono), associate Alicia Rubio-Spring (Up & Coming Lawyer) and Senior Manager, Integrated Marketing Jeff Scalzi (Excellence in Marketing).

Frederickson is a partner in Goodwin’s IP Litigation Group, where he is an experienced trial counsel specializing in representing technology, life sciences, and financial services companies in intellectual property and licensing disputes. Frederickson has a long history of pro bono work involving criminal and immigration matters, and was recently one of several Goodwin lawyers teaming with the ACLU of Massachusetts to bring a series of civil rights lawsuits challenging state and federal policies that deny access to life saving medication to prison inmates suffering from Opioid Use Disorder. These lawsuits resulted in the first reported decision where a court found that the failure to provide inmates access to medications used to treat Opioid Use Disorder likely violates the 8th Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Rubio-Spring is an associate in the Securities, White Collar and Business Litigation group, where she represents clients across industries in a variety of complex litigation matters in both federal and state court, including general commercial litigation, post-closing disputes, and consumer financial services litigation. Rubio-Spring also devotes a great deal of time to numerous community and charitable endeavors, representing pro bono clients in immigration and landlord-tenant matters, serving as a leader of Boston’s Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity (CRED), and participating in the firm’s inaugural class of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s Pathfinder Program. In 2018, she was the recipient of Goodwin’s Robert B. Fraser Pro Bono Award, which honors lawyers who advocate on behalf of those unable to afford legal representation and who make a special contribution to the establishment or enhancement of pro bono programs at the firm.

Scalzi is Goodwin’s Senior Manager for Integrated Marketing, where he is responsible for driving the development, production, distribution and syndication of marketing content across a variety of vehicles, channels and media to maximize reach and to reinforce brand positioning for the firm’s practices. A former President of both the Legal Marketing Association’s New York and New England Chapters, Scalzi also served as Executive Editor of LMA’s monthly publication and chaired the task force that led to LMA’s successful regional restructuring in 2017. Scalzi is a recognized industry leader who was at the forefront of the industry-wide effort to increase the profile of business operations professionals at law firms, as he became the first business operations professional from a law firm named to the Board of Directors of Greater Boston Legal Services.

The Excellence in the Law Awards celebrate the very best lawyers and legal professionals throughout the Massachusetts legal community. The winners will be honored at a ceremony in Boston on April 30th.
