Abdul Abdullahi focuses on helping clients with issues related to intellectual property and technology (IP & T) law, including domestic and international IP & T law. His practice has included: IP litigation, patent preparation and prosecution before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and foreign patent offices; technology transactions and agreements; open source software issues; licensing; assignments; opinions; and IP & T counseling. He has worked on matters involving several technologies, including matters concerning open source and proprietary software, hardware, Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology, blockchain technology, wireless communications/cellular standards, data privacy, electronics, automotive technology, optical systems, green technologies, computer networking, data storage, semiconductors, graphical user interface (GUI) technology, audio driver technology, visual display systems, data management technology, and Internet related technologies. Mr. Abdullahi also has experience developing IP & T management programs for corporate entities and conducting compliance reviews of open source software disclosures.





Mr. Abdullahi’s experience includes:

  • Represented companies in complex IP disputes, including patent and copyright litigation and inter partes reviews.
  • Prepared and prosecuted international and domestic patent applications for major technology companies directed to several technologies, including smartphones, tablets, laptop computers, desktop computers, cameras, and software.*
  • Counseled clients on strategies related to using continuation or divisional patent applications to extend patent lifecycles.*
  • Facilitated technology transactions, including preparing and providing advice on licensing agreements focused on monetizing patents assigned to a major technology company.*
  • Organized and conducted invention harvesting sessions and invention disclosure meetings with inventors.*
  • Prepared and filed patent applications with the USPTO, WIPO, and foreign patent offices, responding to office communications, and preparing for and participating in interviews with USPTO Examiners.*
  • Handled technology transactions and licensing agreements for a private company that designs, manufactures, and sells vision systems and collision warning systems for fleet owners, original equipment manufacturers, and other vision and mobile technology.*
  • Prepared and prosecuted design patents for a private company that designs, manufactures, and sells outdoor cooking items, furniture, utensils, and accessories.*
  • Counseled founder and chief technology officer (CTO) of a multimillion-dollar private software company, on technology transactions, including preparing open source software compliance and disclosures that enabled CTO to direct a twelve-person software engineering team related to the company’s proprietary “RING” software.*

Professional Activities

Mr. Abdullahi  is a member of the Houston Young Lawyers Association (HYLA). He is a member and graduate of HYLA Leadership Academy and received an Award of Achievement for Service to the Public by the Texas Young Lawyers Association. He is also recognized with Pro Bono Distinction from State Bar of TX for CLE program on combatting Human Trafficking in Houston.

Mr. Abdullahi is also involved with Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts, Houston Intellectual Property Law Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, American Bar Association, Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Tahirih Justice Center, and Museum of Fine Arts.
