Dorothy Hazan is a litigation associate in Goodwin’s Complex Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice in Washington, DC. Her practice primarily focuses on business and other commercial disputes in federal court, including lawsuits alleging breach of contract, antitrust claims, fraud allegations, and ERISA violations. Dorothy has experience representing clients at every stage of litigation, including dispositive motion practice, complex discovery, and trial.

Experience

Dorothy’s recent work includes:

  • Securing a defense verdict for a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer in a $3.8 billion antitrust litigation, following a six-week trial in the Northern District of California
  • Defending a university plan sponsor against a class action lawsuit brought by 401(k) plan participants alleging violations of ERISA
  • Defending an investment adviser against a class action lawsuit alleging violations of ERISA
  • Defending the independent trustees of several closed-end funds against litigation brought by an activist investor
  • Securing dismissal with prejudice of alleged fraud claims brought against a national mortgage lender in the District of Rhode Island
  • Representing multiple companies against class action lawsuits related to data security

Pro Bono
Dorothy maintains an active pro bono practice. Her recent work includes:

  • Filing an amicus brief on behalf of the Reproductive Freedom Alliance, urging the United States Supreme Court to reverse a Fifth Circuit ruling that would limit the availability of mifepristone nationwide
  • Representing individual and organizational plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging state restrictions on abortion access in North Carolina
  • Representing multiple children seeking Permanent Resident or Special Immigrant Juvenile status

Prior to working at Goodwin, Dorothy was a legal intern at the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit during the summer of 2017. While at Penn Law, Dorothy also served as a student advocate at the Custody and Support Assistance Clinic from 2016 to 2019, as well as the Interdisciplinary Child Advocacy Clinic in 2019.
