John Raffetto, a senior associate in Goodwin's Consumer Financial Services practice, focuses on defending financial institutions against consumer class action lawsuits and government enforcement actions in federal and state courts. He is a regular contributor to the firm’s LenderLaw Watch blog, which monitors, chronicles and analyzes news and legal issues affecting clients and others in the consumer finance industry.

In addition to his financial-services litigation practice, Mr. Raffetto is a member of the firm’s Environmental Law practice, where he focuses on Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA or Superfund) matters including complex allocation issues.

Mr. Raffetto joined Goodwin in 2011.





Mr. Raffetto has represented financial-services clients in a wide variety of matters including:

  • Nationwide class actions alleging violations of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA)
  • Nationwide class actions alleging federal RICO and state-law violations in the context of mortgage servicing
  • Nationwide class action alleging breach of contract in the context of foreclosure-related fees
  • Nationwide class action alleging violation of the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act (SCRA)
  • Statewide class action alleging breach of contract in sales of Real-Estate Owned (REO) property
  • Government investigation of national mortgage lender under Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act (RESPA)
  • Government investigations of national mortgage lenders under Fair Housing Act (FHA)

He has also represented corporate clients in environmental matters such as:

  • Representing a large industrial company at one of its most important Superfund sites by assisting in developing its allocation case concerning a potentially large remedy
  • Representing a large industrial company in responding to and negotiating with EPA regarding requested clean-up at a delisted Superfund site
Professional Activities

Mr. Raffetto is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the American Bar Association.


While in law school, Mr. Raffetto interned for the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland and the U.S. Department of Justice, Criminal Appellate Section. Mr. Raffetto was an Editor of the Catholic University Law Review and his Note, “Balancing the Legislative Shield,” won Best Student Note in 2010. He also won the Faculty Award for highest grade point average and Alumni Award for service to the law school community.
