Alex Selarnick advises insureds, insurers, and insurtechs, as well as their lenders and investors, on a broad range of compliance, regulatory and transactional matters. With a particular focus on the intersection of insurance and technology, Mr. Selarnick frequently works with insurance companies, producers, MGAs, and start-ups on insurtech products and services, alternative insurance distribution models, contracting with unlicensed entities, and other licensing and compliance matters.

Mr. Selarnick has helped clients navigate complex, multi-jurisdictional insurance laws, defend against regulatory investigations and enforcement actions, and obtain regulatory approvals for transactions involving acquisitions and changes in control. Mr. Selarnick also has extensive trade credit insurance experience, and he guides market leading supply chain and trade finance companies on the development and negotiation of international credit insurance programs.

Outside of the insurance space, Mr. Selarnick also represents clients in a variety of industries on transactions involving investments, mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures.

Mr. Selarnick is admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania only; his application to the D.C. bar is pending. His practice is supervised by D.C.-admitted lawyers at Goodwin.

Prior to joining Goodwin, Mr. Selarnick was most recently an associate at Cooley where he was a member of the firm’s Insurance practice. Prior to Cooley, Mr. Selarnick started his career as an associate at Cozen O’Connor.

Professional Activities

Mr. Selarnick is a member of Cardozo Law School’s Recent Alumni Leadership Council and also sits on the Future PLUS (Professional Liability Underwriting Society) task force.


Mr. Selarnick has been recognized in three consecutive years by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in New York for Insurance (2020, 2021, and 2022). Mr. Selarnick was also a co-recipient of the Legal Aid Society’s Pro Bono Publico Award (2021), which recognizes lawyers who have volunteered their time to provide legal services to low-income New Yorkers, as well as the President’s Award (2018) from the Terrebonne Parish Chapter of the NAACP for his pro bono representation in federal voting rights litigation.
