Bryna Shmerling is an associate in the firm’s Business Law Department and a member of its Technology & Life Sciences group.
Ms. Shmerling represents private equity companies, hospitals and health systems, physician practices, clinical laboratories, biotechnology companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical device and medical mobile app manufacturers, and start-ups in a broad range of health care operational, regulatory, transactional, and compliance matters. Ms. Shmerling’s practice focuses on assisting these clients with analysis and due diligence related to compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and the state and federal fraud and abuse laws (including the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Physician Self-Referral Law (the Stark law), and federal Civil Monetary Penalty provisions), and other laws and regulations governing the delivery of healthcare services.
She brings to her practice experience in health law and insurance regulation. Before entering private practice, Ms. Shmerling served as a law clerk in the Corporate Compliance Department at St. Joseph Medical Center, as a legal intern at the World Health Organization and as a judicial intern to the Honorable Judge Sally D. Adkins of the Court of Appeals of Maryland.
Ms. Shmerling has her Certificate in Health Law from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.
