You have cases to read, journals to run, and clubs to juggle. The curve is unforgiving and, especially at the outset, it’s hard to know how to study and what to prioritize. But, for the most part, you can manage your own schedule and get work done on your own time. At a law firm — not so much. Client deliverables can pop up out of thin air, and multiple partners can come to you with lengthy assignments at once. How do you manage as a summer associate or entry-level lawyer? What do you prioritize? There’s no easy answer, and working at a firm can feel like trial by fire just as much as 1L did. As a first-year associate, Holland admits that he by no means has all the answers — no one does. But with that in mind, he shares a few tips he lives by that can help you stay sane as you navigate a new job and novel workflows.
