Charles Borrero, a student at Georgetown Law School, has an exceptional academic record and is committed to public service. While attending law school, he is also working full time on issues of national importance as a Law Clerk with the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security. In college, Charles led an effort to raise funds for a nonprofit organization that promotes conservation education in Pennsylvania and upstate New York. He and his team raised the money through holding an “Eco-Challenge” competition, which featured trail-running, mountain biking, canoeing and orienteering events, a live band, and numerous restaurant and other sponsors. Charles demonstrates the creativity and initiative we hope to support by creating these Fellowships.
Marie Scott from Harvard Law School (also with an undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Harvard) is Managing Editor of the Harvard Latino Law Review. She has worked with well-known community organizations like the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund in New York and the Radcliffe Center for Public Policy. What really inspired us to choose her as a Fellow was her work as a middle school teacher in Harlem, where she worked tirelessly to convert a dusty attic into a wonderful children’s library. She procured outside funding, studied library organizational systems, catalogued, labeled and cleaned all the books she could assemble, and built a library so well-received that a lot more money was raised, resulting in a wonderful, high tech library for the children in that community.
