Global law firm Goodwin today announced that Matt Bresnahan has joined the firm as a partner in its Life Sciences group and will be Co-Chair of the firm’s San Diego office, which will open later this summer.
“Matt’s arrival strengthens our California platform and reflects our commitment to building the leading life sciences practice globally. We are very pleased to welcome him to Goodwin,” said Mitchell Bloom, partner and chair of the Life Sciences practice at Goodwin. “Intellectual property strategy is central to how life sciences companies are built, financed, partnered, and acquired. Matt brings deep experience helping clients develop patent strategies and portfolios that create real, lasting value.”

Developing and implementing intellectual property strategies that protect clients’ innovations and position them for long-term growth and success has been the focus of my practice for the past two decades, and Goodwin provides an outstanding opportunity to continue that work.”
Matt is a life sciences attorney and advisor that guides biotechnology, therapeutics, genomics, diagnostics, and medical device companies on all aspects of intellectual property (IP) strategy throughout the corporate life cycle. This guidance includes patent prosecution, portfolio development, licensing, freedom-to-operate analyses, IP diligence, financings, IPOs, M&A transactions, and strategic patent litigation. He serves as primary outside IP counsel to more than 50 life sciences companies and is widely regarded for helping emerging and public companies build and leverage patent portfolios that support business growth and value creation.
The new office cements Goodwin’s presence in San Diego, one of the country’s most active innovation hubs, and extends the firm’s West Coast Tech and Life Sciences platform further into Southern California. It positions the firm to work more closely with clients across the region’s innovation ecosystem, from emerging biotech companies to established technology players.
