Howard Cubell is a member and former chair of the Tax practice at Goodwin. Howard’s practice focuses on the development of innovative tax strategies for various domestic and international business transactions, with particular emphasis on representing private equity sponsors in acquiring, disposing of and recapitalizing portfolio companies. He has represented a vast number of private equity sponsors over the course of his career, beginning at the very dawn of the private equity industry in the late 1970's. In addition to his transactional work, Howard has also developed an extensive tax controversy practice representing private equity and VC sponsors and their portfolio companies in tax disputes with the Internal Revenue Service on a variety of issues, including the deductibility of transaction-related expenses in sales of portfolio companies and management fee waivers.

Professional Activities

Howard previously organized and served as the Co-Chairman of “Private Equity Tax Practices,” a major conference in Boston sponsored by the Institute for International Research for a number of years.

Howard is a member of the International Tax Committee of the Boston Bar Association, of which he was the founding chairman, and a member of the Committee on Corporate Tax of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association and the Tax Section of the International Bar Association.
