John Englander is of counsel in Goodwin’s Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice.

Justice Englander returned to Goodwin in 2026 after serving as a judge on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, where he joined the bench in 2017 following his appointment by former Massachusetts Governor Charles Baker. He previously spent 30 years at Goodwin, where he became a partner and later co-chair of the firm’s Litigation department. Over the course of his career at Goodwin, John maintained a broad litigation practice spanning general commercial, class action, and intellectual property matters. He was a co-founder of two Goodwin litigation practice areas – Intellectual Property and Consumer Financial Services Litigation. From 2015 to 2017, he served as General Counsel to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, overseeing all legal matters for both agencies.

John began his legal career clerking for Judge Bailey Aldrich of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Justice William H. Rehnquist of the United States Supreme Court.

John is admitted to practice in Massachusetts. He was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in 1984, and to various federal courts since that time. John is also a member of the bar of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In addition, he has been specially admitted to practice in courts in 32 states.

  • General Electric in Lectrolarm Custom Services v. General Electric, a patent infringement suit involving security technology; 2011 U.S. Dist., Lexis 91435, aff’d, 2012 U.S. App. Lexis 26257 (Fed. Cir. 2012)
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals in Eli Lilly v. TEVA Pharmaceutical, a patent infringement suit involving a chemotherapy agent; 689 F.3d 1368 (Fed. Cir. 2012)
  • Applied Materials in Applied Materials v. AMEC, in which Applied Materials alleged trade secret misappropriation against AMEC, a Chinese manufacturer of semiconductor equipment; No. C 07-05248 JW, (N.D. Cal.) (settled 2010)
  • ViaCell in PharmaStem v. ViaCell, a patent infringement suit involving the stem cells in umbilical cord blood; 491 F.3d 1342 (Fed. Cir. 2007)

Copyright and Trade Secrets

  • Aereo in ABC v. Aereo, a high-profile copyright case brought against Aereo by all the major broadcast television networks now pending in the U.S. Supreme Court (lead trial counsel); 712 F.3d 676 (2nd Cir. 2013)
  • Cablevision in Cartoon Network v. Cablevision, a dispute involving the copyright implications of a cable company’s remote storage DVR; 478 F.Supp.2d 607 (S.D.N.Y). 2007, 536 F.3d 121 (2d Cir. 2008)
