Goodwin today announced that former Massachusetts Appeals Court Justice John Englander has joined the firm as Of Counsel in its Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice, further strengthening the firm’s appellate and litigation capabilities.
"John's return to Goodwin significantly strengthens our appellate practice," said Kevin Martin, Co-Chair of Goodwin's Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation Practice. "During his three decades of practice before going on the bench, John was a trusted advocate who provided insight and experience at every level of the federal and state judiciaries. His eight years of experience gained on the Massachusetts bench will be invaluable to our clients involved in complex, high-stakes litigation."
Justice Englander is returning to Goodwin after serving as a judge on the Massachusetts Appeals Court, where he joined the bench in 2017 following his appointment by former Massachusetts Governor Charles Baker. He previously spent 30 years at Goodwin, where he became a partner and later co-chair of the firm’s Litigation department. Over the course of his career, he maintained a broad litigation practice spanning general commercial, class action, and intellectual property matters. From 2015 to 2017, he served as General Counsel to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, overseeing all legal matters for both agencies. John earned his J.D. from Boston University School of Law, after which he clerked for Judge Bailey Aldrich on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit and Justice William Rehnquist on the United States Supreme Court.
