Jacob Tyson is an associate in Goodwin’s Litigation department.

EXPERIENCE

Jake’s practice focuses on consumer financial services litigation, government and internal investigations, and complex commercial litigation. His clients have included banks and financial institutions, real estate investment trusts, cryptocurrency firms, public and private companies, and individuals. He has broad experience in various substantive areas of the law, including consumer financial law, constitutional and administrative law, securities, torts, products liability, and intellectual property. He also maintains a robust pro bono practice covering matters involving constitutional law and civil rights, prisoner and immigrant rights, and voting rights.

Previously, Jake worked in the appellate section of the Burton Blatt Institute. During law school, Jake served as an extern for FINRA Enforcement, working on cases involving market manipulation, insider trading, money laundering, public benefits fraud, penny stock fraud, and SEC Rule 144 violations. He also practiced as a student attorney at the Health Rights Law Clinic, representing clients in disputes with healthcare providers, insurers, and federal agencies in Washington, DC.

Jake’s recent representations include:

  • The chief executive of a lease-to-own business in a CFPB investigation and subsequent litigation involving the CFPA, EFTA, TILA, and FCRA
  • A leading REIT in litigation related to disputes with its external manager
  • One of the top-five largest banks in multidistrict EFTA litigation regarding employment benefits fraud protection
  • A consulting firm in connection with multidistrict pharmaceutical products liability litigation
  • A top-ten mortgage lender in CFPB enforcement actions involving RESPA
  • A pharmaceutical manufacturer in connection with Lanham Act and unfair competition claims regarding false statements made by a competitor.

Jake’s pro bono representations have included:

  • Directing the advocacy effort as the only litigator in a challenge to a federal drug conspiracy sentence after a shift in Eleventh Circuit interpretation of federal sentencing guidelines
  • Representing a class of immigrant detainees in FOIA litigation and Fourteenth Amendment right to healthcare litigation
  • Representing a criminal detainee in 42 U.S.C § 1983 civil rights and Fourteenth Amendment right to healthcare litigation
  • Counseling public advocacy organization in a constitutional challenge to public education funding ballot initiative
