Commerce Puts Export Curbs on Gene-Editing Software (Law360)

The U.S. Department of Commerce finalized export curbs Monday targeting software that people can use to generate pathogens or toxins while evading regulatory controls on sensitive biological materials. Goodwin Global Trade, Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity, and Digital Currency & Blockchain Technology practices partner Jacob Osborn told Law360 that the new export controls would likely affect universities, research institutes and biotechnology firms that develop or use the software, but these are the types of institutions that already have to deal with export control issues and are well-equipped to do so.
