Patty Johansen is Goodwin’s Director of Knowledge Management for Business Law and also serves as Counsel. Ms. Johansen focuses on knowledge management and practice innovation to enable the firm's Business Law lawyers to deliver high value legal services to its clients. Ms. Johansen and her team are responsible for artificial intelligence technologies that enhance attorney workflows and processes. She and her team also developed and maintain the firm’s Document Driver®, a free online legal document generation solution, on the firm’s Founders Workbench site. Ms. Johansen’s work on Goodwin’s innovative legal collaboration with Shoobx, a web-based ecosystem for startups, was shortlisted as a nominee for the ILTA 2017 Innovative Project of the Year Award – Client Facing.
Ms. Johansen directs a staff of professional support lawyers tasked to develop know how, monitor legal developments, and deliver practice tools. She also oversees the capture and leverage of the firm’s business law experience, and the maintenance of knowledge sharing platforms for the Business Law Department.
Prior to rejoining Goodwin in 2005, Ms. Johansen was a partner at McDermott, Will & Emery, and prior to that, Senior Legal Counsel at Fidelity Investments. Ms. Johansen started her legal career at Goodwin as a corporate associate. As a practicing attorney, she represented private equity firms on matters including venture capital funds in early and late stage investments, leveraged buyouts and recapitalizations. She also represented emerging and established private and public companies in a wide variety of corporate and securities law matters, including private and public securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions and going private transactions.
Ms. Johansen is a member of the Massachusetts bar and also a member of the American and Boston Bar Associations and the International Legal Technology Association.
Ms. Johansen holds a J.D. from Boston College Law School (magna cum laude) and a B.A. from Bucknell University (magna cum laude).Ms. Johansen has spoken on knowledge management topics, including “Why Isn’t Document Assembly Transforming Practice?” ILTACON 2017 and “Quality In, Quality Out: Data Analytics Preparation” ILTACON 2015.
