Goodwin Deepens Life Sciences Intellectual Property Bench With Matt Wheeler in San Diego

Global law firm Goodwin today announced that Matt Wheeler has joined the firm as partner in the Life Sciences group in its San Diego Office.

“Matt brings the deep scientific insight and practical IP strategy that life sciences companies need as they innovate and scale,” said Mitchell Bloom, partner and chair of the Life Sciences practice. “His arrival further strengthens our industry-leading patent team in California and further expands the integrated platform we offer clients developing the next generation of therapies, diagnostics, and medical technologies.”

“The pace of innovation in life sciences continues to accelerate, and clients need advisors who can pair deep technical knowledge with practical business guidance,” said Matt Wheeler. “Goodwin’s platform is uniquely positioned to deliver that, and I look forward to helping clients protect and maximize the value of their breakthroughs.”

Matt advises biotechnology, therapeutics, diagnostics, and medical device companies on global intellectual property strategy. His practice spans patent prosecution, portfolio development, freedom-to-operate analyses, post-grant proceedings, and IP diligence for M&A, private financings, and public offerings. Drawing on an extensive scientific background in immunology, antibody engineering, and biologics, Matt helps clients, from emerging companies to publicly traded life sciences companies, build and manage innovative patent portfolios that support long-term business goals.

Matt’s arrival follows the recent addition of Matt Bresnahan, who joined Goodwin earlier this month as co-chair of the firm’s San Diego office, further expanding Goodwin’s capabilities and commitment to serving life sciences leaders in one of the industry’s leading markets.

With more than 240 dedicated lawyers and patent agents across all major life sciences hubs in the US, Europe, and Asia, Goodwin works with life sciences companies throughout the corporate lifecycle — from startup and commercial-stage to maturity — as well as investors, banks, and others in the life sciences ecosystem. The firm understands the unique challenges life science companies face in securing funding, licensing and safeguarding intellectual property, establishing partnerships, bringing new products to market, opening new revenue streams, and protecting existing product lines. The team takes a multidisciplinary approach to address clients’ challenges, drawing on deep expertise across industries — such as technology, healthcare, real estate, and private equity — as well as the full spectrum of relevant practices.
