Sophie Barnett is an associate in Goodwin’s Complex Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice. She advises clients on a variety of matters, including internal and government-facing investigations, regulatory inquiries, and commercial and civil disputes, with a recent focus on privacy and cybersecurity litigation. Sophie is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).

Previous Professional Experience

Prior to joining Goodwin, Sophie practiced for several years as a litigation associate at a large international law firm in both New York, NY and Washington, D.C. In that role, Sophie represented corporations, executives, public officials, and individuals in litigation and investigations involving data breaches, privacy compliance, white collar and anti-corruption matters, class action and multidistrict litigations, and business tort actions. She also completed a secondment at a major financial institution, where she advised on compliance with U.S. and international data protection laws and risk management practices for artificial intelligence.

During law school, she was an associate editor of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law Review, a caseworker at an immigration law clinic, and a panel member on the trial division of the University’s academic discipline tribunal. She also completed an internship with the Office of the Prosecutor at the United Nations International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in The Hague (the successor tribunal to the International Criminal Tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia and Rwanda), and worked at the Citizen Lab, an interdisciplinary research center that focuses on the intersection between cyber and human rights.
