Dr. Lily Xu is a partner in the firm’s Life Sciences group and a member of its intellectual property counseling practice. Dr. Xu develops global patent strategies for start-up and later-stage biotech companies. She also guides clients through competitive patent landscape analyses and conducts in-depth risk assessment of third-party patent rights. Additionally, leveraging experience as companies’ IP counsel, Dr. Xu conducts IP due diligence for various business transactions.

Dr. Xu has a strong scientific foundation and deep technical understanding. Familiar with oncology, immunology, protein engineering (e.g., antibody technology), cell therapy (e.g., T cell and stem cell therapies), and gene therapy (e.g., nucleic acid vectors and CRISPR technology), Dr. Xu integrates critical scientific insights into her legal counsel.

Dr. Xu has extensive experience in structuring patent portfolios for early-stage biotech companies, as well as expanding and managing patent estates for later-stage biotech companies. She engages in strategic discussions with clients to determine optimal timing for patent filings in relation to investor communications. She also conducts patentability analyses to pursue competitive patent coverage. Additionally, Dr. Xu is well-versed in IP provisions in collaboration and licensing agreements and advises clients on optimizing company rights under licensing frameworks.

Dr. Xu guides clients through competitive patent landscape analyses. She leverages search strategies customized to specific technical domains, based on a deep understanding of clients’ technologies. She also conducts in-depth risk assessment of third-party patent rights, including comprehensive legal research on patent infringement and validity.

Dr. Xu also conducts IP due diligence for public offering, private financing, collaboration and licensing transactions, including many cross-border deals.
