Stephen Waters is a science advisor in the firm's Business Law Department and a member of its Intellectual Property Group. He joined Goodwin in 2015.
Dr. Waters assists clients with prior art research, patent preparation, patent prosecution and freedom to operate analyses. He has extensive experience in the fields of synthetic organic chemistry, natural product total synthesis, heterocyclic chemistry, and pharmaceuticals.
Prior to joining Goodwin, Dr. Waters was an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Vermont, where his research centered on the total synthesis of medicinally relevant natural products, including macrolides and alkaloids, as well as contributions to the area of heterocyclic methodology. Prior to Dr. Waters’ academic position, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York under the mentorship of Prof. Samuel J. Danishefsky, where his research included the first total synthesis of the neuroptrophic diterpenoid scabronine G and neurotrophically active synthetic analogues. Dr. Waters earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, where his synthetic studies were directed toward the rubromycin group of antitumor antibiotics. He has presented his work at invited lectures and national conferences, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in journals including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Journal of Organic Chemistry, Organic Letters, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, Tetrahedron, and Tetrahedron Letters. He has authored a book chapter for Strategies and Tactics in Organic Synthesis and is named as co-inventor on a U.S. Patent.
