Former Federal Prosecutor and Cyber Investigations Leader Jud Welle Joins Goodwin’s Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice in New York

Global law firm Goodwin announced today that former federal prosecutor and leading cybersecurity investigator Jud Welle joined the firm’s Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity practice as a partner, resident in the New York office.

“Cybersecurity issues present some of the greatest legal challenges that companies around the world face today,” said Goodwin Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity partner Boris Segalis. “Jud’s experience with mission-critical breach response and cyber litigation brings invaluable support to our clients, as the need to be strategic in incident response is more important now than ever before. We are thrilled to have him on board as we continue to add industry-leading data, privacy, and cybersecurity lawyers to our global team.”

Welle counsels clients on cyber incident response and preparedness, response to insider threats and nation state attacks, cyber threat assessment, cybersecurity governance, digital forensics, compliance, and litigation. He draws from over two decades of experience leading investigations into hackers and spies, presenting cases to juries, arguing issues before courts, counseling executives and boards, and responding to crises, and joins Goodwin’s existing team of former federal prosecutors.

During Welle’s 12-year tenure as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey in Newark, he served in the roles of Cyber Crime Coordinator and National Security Cyber Specialist, where he led the office’s efforts to combat computer hacking and data theft by nation states, criminal networks, and insider threats. Welle also served as a fellow with the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force, a multi-agency cyber center led by the FBI and composed of more than 20 partnering agencies from across law enforcement, the intelligence community, and the Department of Defense.

Most recently before joining Goodwin, Welle served as managing director, head of the digital investigations & cyber defense practice, and chief counsel for cybersecurity & privacy at Nardello & Company, a Chambers-recognized global investigations firm. Prior to Nardello, Welle was a managing director at specialized risk management firm Stroz Friedberg.

In the past four months, Goodwin also welcomed leading privacy and cybersecurity partners Omer Tene in Boston and Lore Leitner in London.

Goodwin’s Data, Privacy & Cybersecurity practice leverages the firm’s strengths in technology, life sciences, healthcare, financial institutions, real estate, licensing, litigation, and regulatory compliance. The practice provides a full spectrum of services, including counseling, transaction-related advice, incident preparedness and response and defense of class action litigation and government enforcement actions.
