Recreational and medical use of cannabis is legal in many states. On a federal level, however, cannabis still remains illegal as a Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act. "You see no movement with the federal government around opening up research and thinking through scheduling," says Jennifer Fisher, partner and co-chair of the Cannabis practice. After the US 2020 elections, "many people were coming to me wanting to prepare for legalization, but now I think people are thinking through how to continue operating in the environment we're in with this conflict between federal and state law," Fisher told Reuters.
