India, Japan Stand Out in Asia's Private Equity Fundraising (Nikkei Asian Review)

Investor sentiment toward China is gradually brightening after years of gloom brought on by the pandemic and Beijing's clash with Washington, experts say. Last month, the U.S. and China agreed to postpone imposing tariffs on each other for another 90 days, offering relief to global investors. But the Chinese economy continues to struggle with weak domestic demand and slowing exports. Its consumer price index for August fell more than expected. "While we may not have seen a lot of completed deal activity, there's a whole lot more interest in exploring one," said Edwin Chan, partner at law firm Goodwin. "What we've seen is that [an upturn in the IPO market] does certainly improve the sentiment," said Goodwin's Chan. Regardless of whether these offerings are private investors cashing out, market activity "allows [such investors] to say, 'Well, at least I can go in knowing that this is a good business and that there is value that can be realized at some point.'”
