Goodwin Taps Pharma Litigator as Appellate Leader After Exits (Bloomberg Law)

Goodwin elevated Brian Burgess to take over as co-chair of its Supreme Court and Appellate practice. Burgess, a former clerk to Justice Sonia Sotomayor and special assistant to the Solicitor General, will co-lead the practice, Goodwin said Friday. He will work alongside Kevin Martin, the group’s longtime co-leader. Burgess is a Washington-based lawyer who joined Goodwin in 2013 and also leads the firm’s FDA litigation practice. He has argued twice before the Supreme Court and regularly represents pharmaceutical companies in litigation against the federal government. Burgess recently led the Goodwin team that obtained a Seventh Circuit victory for Teva Pharmaceuticals in breach of contract claims against Eli Lilly. He said associate development will be among his top priorities in the new role. “We serve our clients best when we build strong teams and develop multiple lawyers who are capable of assuming first-chair roles,” he said. “We also have an opportunity to differentiate our group by developing attorneys who are not only appellate experts but become experts in our client’s industries.”
