Goodwin Procter Named Law Firm of the Year By Private Equity Real Estate Magazine for Fourth Consecutive Year

NEW YORK , March 7, 2011Goodwin Procter LLP, a national Am Law 50 firm, has been named North America’s Law Firm of the Year (Fund Formation) by Private Equity Real Estate magazine (PERE) for the fourth consecutive year. In 2010, the firm’s Real Estate Private Investment Funds Practice advised on more than 35 real estate fund closings, totaling more than $7 billion in raised capital. PERE is a PEI Media publication covering the international private equity real estate community.  Its annual Global Awards are the only industry awards voted on by industry professionals.

PERE highlighted Goodwin’s representation of Beacon Capital in its final closing of a $2.5 billion office property fund and Cornerstone Real Estate Advisors in the final closing of two vehicles valued at over $1 billion.

In addition, Goodwin advised Brookfield Asset Management in connection with General Growth Properties’ recapitalization, which was recognized as PERE’s Global and North American Deal of the Year. As part of the deal – the largest real estate-related Chapter 11 filing in U.S. history –  Goodwin represented Brookfield in capitalizing its $2.43 billion cornerstone equity investment in GGP. The firm’s role encompassed numerous complex commercial, tax and securities issues.

“We’re pleased to once again be recognized by PERE as Law Firm of the Year in the fund formation space,” said David Watson, co-chair of Goodwin’s Real Estate Private Investment Funds Practice. “And knowing that we were selected by industry leaders makes this acknowledgment even more significant.”

Co-chaired by Robert S. Insolia in New York and David W. Watson in Boston, Goodwin’s Real Estate Private Investment Funds Practice is one of the largest and most established in the United States. Its clients include real estate investment managers raising and deploying capital, as well as public REITs, insurance companies and investment banks involved in the real estate investment management business. The team also works with hedge fund and private equity fund managers expanding their funds to include real estate as an investment focus.
