Partner Karen Chao Joins Goodwin’s Global Private Investment Funds Practice

Global law firm Goodwin today announced that Karen Chao joined the firm’s Private Investment Funds practice as partner, resident in the New York office.

“Having Karen on board further strengthens our market-leading private investment funds team as our clients around the world continue to raise and invest significant amounts of capital,” said Paul Verbesey, co-chair of the Private Investment Funds practice. “Karen’s experience and skills are particularly aligned with our clients’ needs and she will be a major asset to our existing global private equity and private funds practice.”

Chao represents private equity fund managers on fund formation activities, including raising buyout, credit, distressed credit, and secondary funds. She regularly advises private equity fund-sponsor clients on operational matters, including subscription-secured credit facilities, investment structuring, and other life-of-fund matters, as well as on a variety of regulatory compliance matters. In addition, Chao counsels institutional investors on investments in private funds and separate and/or managed accounts.

Goodwin’s global Private Investment Funds team of 140+ funds lawyers supports investment managers raising capital to invest in the private equity, real estate, technology, and life sciences sectors. Goodwin counts close to 500 investment managers as clients in fund formation, and has closed well over $100 billion into private funds in the last three years. Within the past year, Goodwin was named the top firm for fund formation by Law360, the Legal 500 UK Awards, IJ Global, and SuperReturn Awards. Goodwin has been named North American Law Firm of the Year by Private Equity Real Estate in the North American Fund Formation and Transactions categories more times than any other law firm since this award was established in 2007.
