Goodwin Advises Mission BioCapital on Securing Eligibility for $44.5 Million Non-Dilutive Funding Through AMED Program

Goodwin’s Life Sciences and Private Equity teams advised Mission BioCapital (MBC) on its successful application to participate in the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) Drug Discovery Venture Ecosystem Enhancement Project. The program enables certified venture capital firms and AMED-approved portfolio companies to access significant non-dilutive funding for therapeutic development, including up to approximately $44.5 million per program through a 2:1 government matching mechanism tied to qualifying venture capital investments. The initiative is designed to strengthen Japan’s drug discovery ecosystem and accelerate the development of innovative therapies. MBC was supported in its application by its affiliate, BioLabs.

AMED’s highly selective program is currently offered through biannual application cycles. In the latest cycle, MBC was one of only five venture capital firms selected from a pool of 13 applicants following an extensive review of application materials and interviews conducted by AMED.

MBC is a leading life sciences venture capital firm and startup development platform that invests in and supports innovative biotechnology companies. Through its investment activities and broader life sciences network, MBC helps entrepreneurs translate scientific discoveries into venture-backed companies and advance promising technologies toward commercialization, making it well positioned to identify and support high-potential therapeutic opportunities under the AMED program.

BioLabs are the premier co-working spaces for life sciences startups, unique places where startups can test, develop, and grow their game-changing ideas. BioLabs’ goal is to change how scientific entrepreneurs do business by building an ecosystem that empowers bioinnovators to grow quickly, while maximizing capital efficiency.
