Employers Should Use Updated Form I-9 No Later Than May 1, 2020

An updated version of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Form I-9, found online here, is now available. Employers should begin to use the updated form no later than May 1, 2020. Unless re-verification is required (as may periodically be the case with certain employees on work visas, for example), there is no requirement to obtain new Forms I-9 from current employees. The new form differs in only insignificant ways from the previous form, so human resources personnel should not require any additional training in order to complete the forms. Still, because use of the latest version of the form is a legal requirement, employers should be sure not to overlook the May 1, 2020 deadline to begin using the new form.
