2024 Children’s Privacy Outlook: Preparing for Regulatory Changes

For the first time in a decade, the FTC has proposed revisions to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule, with the comment period closing in early March 2024. Against this backdrop, state legislatures continue to pass children’s privacy legislation and social media bans, and European regulators have issued large fines for violations of children’s privacy laws. In light of this rapidly changing landscape, companies -- even those whose websites are not directly targeted at children -- should be thinking now about how to design and update their products and services to reduce legal risk.
